An ocean full of ideas – things you can do to help our environment
In a nutshell::
Reduce waste, reuse items, respect nature – and tell others about it!
TDV ’s opinion:
Spending a day ‚in the wild‘, admiring the local flora and fauna, enjoying clean beaches and forests – these are often considered essential aspects of a holiday trip, but they seem to lose their importance back home in everyday life. However, as a matter of fact, plants, animals, and humans rely on a healthy environment all year round! If you keep this in mind and reflect on your daily actions, then you’re already making a difference for the planet.
Our tips for your daily routine:

Shopping
Take some reusable bags with you when you do the groceries. Avoid single-use plastic bags!
Try to avoid buying packaged items – prioritize unpackaged products instead. This saves natural resources (many plastics are made from crude oil!) and waste.
Food
Reduce your meat consumption and inform yourself about the conditions under which the animals are kept. Livestock production requires huge amounts of energy, water and land. It is causing the majority of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
Even though fish are commonly considered a very healthy food, try to reduce your fish consumption and avoid farmed fish. The oceans suffer from overfishing and cannot keep up with the demand of billions of people. Salmon aquaculture has already destroyed entire ecosystems with its mass production.
Buy your food from local producers – this avoids long transport routes through the oceans, by air, or on roads.
Energy consumption:
If you have a choice among various energy suppliers, make an informed decision what source of energy you prefer. Rates for renewable energy sources are not necessarily more expensive than the standard (fossil fuel) rates of the common providers.
Wind and sun can dry your clothes at no cost, if you have an outside space where to put them. Tumble dryers can make up one fifth of a family’s annual electricity usage!
Waste + wastewater:
Whether you’re walking along the beach, in a forest or through a city centre, don’t litter! Make sure to properly dispose of your trash – if necessary, take it back home with you. This is just fair to all the other people who are going to walk there, too.
Make sure that your outdoor garbage bin does not overflow – small pieces of trash can get blown off by wind. Those tiny parts can turn out fatal for birds and also for marine animals, since they find their way via streams and rivers into the ocean.
Avoid cosmetic products containing microplastics! With the wastewater, the microscopic particles reach the sea and eventually the food chain. In the process, the microplastic soaks up toxic substances and carries them along..
