Orcas Die Young in Captivity

John Jett and Jeffrey Ventre, known from the movie Blackfish, have scientifically analyzed the survival rate of captive orcas. Their results, published in the journal Marine Mammal Science, leave no doubt that captivity leads to a short lifespan. Jett & Ventre report that the “overall median survival estimate was 6.1 yr, with no difference between male and female survival. “Whales entering captivity after 1 January 1985 did survive longer (11.8 yr), yet this is still “poor when compared to wild killer whales”.
